A Sunflower made my day!
So, last June we got birdfeeders. Don't ask how it came about, but it involved a gift certificate from the Rock and I put off going into the bird store for a long time.
Here are the birdfeeders....The tall on is the gift. The other is an experimental crafty thing.
We get alot of traffic in the tube feeder from house finches and goldfinches.
Little Hill points them out to us and Littlest has been doing finch birdcalls for MONTHS. She basically has one sound that she makes and it is either a question or interrogative depending on circumstances. It is amazing the impact that the bird feeder has had on our daily lives, just with watching the birds, and watching the cats watch the birds. There have been times when Littlest has been crying and then suddenly sees a bird and stops crying to point the bird out to us. Apparently, it is impossible to make a bird call while crying or screaming.
What does this has to do with knitting? you ask.
Well, the other night, I look out at the bird feeder and saw this.....
A sunflower apparently grew overnight under my bird feeder. This is very strange for a couple of reasons:
1. Literally, I had just filled the feeder up and DID NOT SEE the sunflower that came up to my belly button.
2. The seed we buy for the feeder is treated to not germinate. Now clearly, since I don't have a field of sunflowers under my window, the treatment works almost all the time.
3. This year I am part of the Dyer's Garden Along, and part of a Dyer's garden could be a sunflower. So naturally, I plan to enjoy the flower and then harvest the whole thing for the dyepot!
And on that note, I leave you with this.

what a pretty sunflower!
ooohhh...
That's pretty cool. The seed that got away!
What a wonderful surprise to see such a pretty flower out the window--and the wonderful sunny day to enjoy it.
Thanks for the beautiful flower. What a nice note of serendipity for you. Must get the bird feeder out here.
Thanks for your knittyboard comment.
So pretty! What a wonderful surprise!
How beautiful. Makes you think of how often we might miss the beauty in life when all along it comes right up to our belly button.
